How the plate is made
Every day NASA publishes one photograph. This page reprints it as a
halftone: the image is sampled onto a grid, and each cell is pushed to
the nearest available tone by an ordered dither — the same
threshold matrix newspapers used to print photographs with nothing but
ink and paper. Depth sets how many tones the plate is allowed. At two,
you are looking at pure black and white. At sixteen, the photograph
reassembles.
Nothing here is decoration. Four live feeds set the printing
conditions, one feed to one condition:
- Photograph
- NASA’s Astronomy Picture of the Day is the plate itself.
A new one every morning.
- Solar flares
- Activity from NASA’s DONKI database crushes the tone range.
An angry sun forces the plate toward one bit.
- Temperature
- Charleston’s current temperature sets the ink colour,
cold blue through warm rust.
- Cloud cover
- Overcast lifts the blacks and flattens contrast, the way
an overcast sky does to everything under it.
- Wind
- Wind speed drifts the threshold matrix across the plate,
so the grain crawls.
- Near-Earth objects
- The closest asteroid passing today sends a pressure wave
through the field. Closer approach, deeper swell.
